Earth Day event at Interpretive Center
Earth Day is a time to celebrate the successes and create new visions to continue our progress. Earth Day is a time for the community to unite on behalf of our environment. To celebrate the first Earth Day in 1970, the Clear Creek Trail is promoting ecosystem stewardship by educating the community about surface and stormwater maintenance and how this knowledge can be used to improve water quality in Clear Creek and Dyes Inlet.
Join us on Saturday, April 19th, for several activities:
    From 0800 until noon,
the Clear Creek Task Force and Navy volunteers are partnering to clean up at the Old Mill Park, just southwest of the Interpretive Center on Bucklin Hill Road.  The site is located on Dyes Inlet, clean up will involve the collection of trash and debris and eradicating blackberries and scotch broom.  Tools will be provided by the Clear Creek Task Force.  Volunteers should wear long sleeves and pants. Drop us a line to let us know you’re coming. ClearCreekTrail@yahoo.com   For more info, visit us at www.ClearCreekTrail.org.
Then join in from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Clear Creek Sa’qad Interpretive Center for an overview of t
he Kitsap County Surface and Stormwater Management Program. Mindy Fohn will enlighten, instruct and inform about how the Kitsap County Health Department is working to keep our creeks and bays healthy. The Clear Creek Task Force is partnering later this summer to attach markers to storm drains throughout the Silverdale business area. Markers would remind people that surface water, sometimes carrying pollutants, drains into Clear Creek and then to Dyes Inlet.
Additionally, find out other ways to slow and clean stormwater as it runs off your roof, walkways, decks and driveways.  Learn about Rain Gardens and how to design your landscaping to protect our streams, inlet and wetlands. Art Castle will show you how the Homebuilders Association built their rain garden. For more info,  ClearCreekTrail@yahoo.com   or visit us at www.ClearCreekTrail.org.

16th Annual Earth Day Work Party with CKHS students

The 16th annual partnership between hundreds of Central Kitsap High School students and the Clear Creek Task Force begins at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 24th.  Students in the past have assembled boardwalk, dug a myriad of postholes, shoveled tons of gravel, manned a cadre of wheelbarrow, and raked miles of gravel.   "This is something they feel good about doing," said Marie Crumb, the teacher who motivated her students to get involved in trail work. "It's a real buy-in to the community. They're doing something to be a part of the community."   This year, the students will build a connecting trail in the north end of the Clear Creek Valley about a quarter mile south of Trigger Avenue and just east of the Clear Creek Bike Trail. The students will be working on 600 feet of trail in addition to a short boardwalk across an irrigation ditch and will whack blackberries and scotch broom.. Many, many thanks to Ace Paving, Taco Bell, Silverdale Water District, Kitsap County Parks and Public Works whose assistance in this program is greatly appreciated.
Volunteers are needed, along side Task Force members, to help supervise around a hundred students from Central Kitsap High School. The Students arrive by bus at 9:00 a.m. and depart at noon.   Adult volunteers will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Schold Road trail head (behind Country Meadows) Sturdy shoes, long sleeves and pants are recommended. Park along Schold Road or at Gateway Park and walk to the Trail Head.
Many, many thanks to Ace Paving, Taco Bell, Costco, Albertsons, Alaska Distributing, Silverdale Water District, Kitsap County Parks and Public Works, whose assistance in this program is greatly appreciated.
